If you are traveling by car, start your journey from the provincial capital of Highlands Papua, Wamena. Head southeast on the Trans Papua Highway (also known as the Jayapura-Wamena Road). The drive will take approximately 5-7 hours depending on road conditions. It is advisable to stop at local towns along the way, such as Kanggime and Asotipo, for rest and refueling. Make sure to fill up your tank as service stations can be sparse. Upon reaching the town of Mulia, continue towards the east until you reach the junction leading to the Autonomous Region of Bougainville. From there, follow the signs directing you to Mount Balbi.

For those opting for public transportation, take a bus or shared taxi (known locally as an 'angkot') from Wamena to Mulia. Buses run regularly from early morning until late afternoon, and the fare is approximately 50,000 IDR. The journey will take around 6 hours. Once in Mulia, you can find a local minibus or hire a motorcycle taxi to take you to the nearest point to Mount Balbi. This last leg of the journey may take about 1-2 hours, and fares can range from 100,000 to 200,000 IDR depending on negotiation.
