If you're starting from Ambon, the capital of Maluku, drive to the Port of Ambon. The journey will take about 1 hour. From there, you'll need to take a ferry to Banda Neira, which is the nearest major island to Banda Api. The ferry operates several times a week, and the ticket costs approximately IDR 200,000 per person. The ferry ride will take about 4-5 hours. Once you arrive at Banda Neira, you can hire a local boat or arrange for a tour to take you to Banda Api, which is about a 30-minute boat ride away.
Public Transportation
From Ambon, take a public minibus (Angkot) to the Port of Ambon. The fare is around IDR 15,000. Once at the port, purchase your ferry tickets to Banda Neira. After arriving in Banda Neira, you can look for local fishing boats or tour operators who can take you to Banda Api. Ensure to negotiate the fare for the boat ride, which typically ranges from IDR 100,000 to IDR 150,000 per person depending on the number of passengers.
Combination of Car and Boat
For those who have rented a car, drive to the Port of Ambon and park your vehicle there if it's allowed. Take the ferry to Banda Neira. Upon arrival in Banda Neira, you can rent a local boat directly to Banda Api. Make sure to confirm the return schedule, as boats may not run frequently. The total cost for the entire trip, including parking and boat rental, could be around IDR 300,000 to IDR 500,000 or more depending on the services you choose.
