Mount Bromo is named after Brahma, the Hindu creator god. According to local legend, the Tengger people, who inhabit the area, are descendants of the Majapahit Empire. A childless couple, Roro Anteng and Joko Seger, prayed to the gods for children and were blessed with 25. However, they had to sacrifice their youngest, Kesuma, to the volcano to fulfill their vow. This legend is commemorated in the annual Yadnya Kasada festival.

During the height of the Majapahit Empire in the 14th century, the region around Mount Bromo was a significant part of the empire's domain.
