History of Mount Bromo
-
Mount Bromo is named after Brahma, the Hindu creator god. According to local legend, the Tengger people, who inhabit the area, are descendants of the Majapahit Empire. A childless couple, Roro Anteng and Joko Seger, prayed to the gods for children and were blessed with 25. However, they had to sacrifice their youngest, Kesuma, to the volcano to fulfill their vow. This legend is commemorated in the annual Yadnya Kasada festival.
-
During the height of the Majapahit Empire in the 14th century, the region around Mount Bromo was a significant part of the empire's domain. The influence of the Majapahit is still evident today in the local culture, traditions, and even the language spoken by the Tengger people, which has roots in Old Javanese.
-
One of the most important cultural events at Mount Bromo is the Yadnya Kasada festival. Held annually in the 12th month of the Tenggerese calendar, the festival involves the Tenggerese people making offerings of vegetables, livestock, and money, which are thrown into the crater of Mount Bromo. This ritual honors the ancestors and the gods, particularly the god Brahma.
-
During the Dutch colonial period in the 19th and early 20th centuries, Mount Bromo and its surrounding areas were explored and documented extensively by European scholars and adventurers. The region was mapped, and the volcano's activity was closely monitored. This period also saw the introduction of Western agricultural practices to the region.
-
In recent decades, Mount Bromo has become a major tourist destination, attracting visitors from around the world. The stunning sunrises over the volcanic landscape, the sea of sand, and the cultural richness of the Tenggerese people all contribute to its allure. The Indonesian government has made efforts to promote sustainable tourism while preserving the natural and cultural heritage of the region.
