Car
If you're starting from the city of Jayapura, drive southwest on the Trans Papua Highway (Route 1) towards Enarotali. The distance is approximately 371 km and the journey may take around 10 hours, depending on road conditions. Be prepared for rough and unpaved sections of the road. Make sure to fill your fuel tank in Jayapura, as there are limited fuel stations along the way. Once you reach Enarotali, you can ask locals for directions to Mogeya, which is the nearest area to Paniai Lakes.
Public Transportation - Bus
From Jayapura, take a bus to Enarotali. Buses operate regularly from the main bus terminal in Jayapura. The fare is approximately IDR 150,000 to IDR 200,000 for a one-way trip. The bus journey can take around 10-12 hours, so be prepared for a long ride. Upon arrival in Enarotali, you can hire a local taxi or motorbike taxi to take you to Mogeya. This ride will take about 30 minutes and should cost around IDR 50,000.
Local Transport - Ojek (Motorbike Taxi)
Once in Mogeya, you can hire an ojek to take you to the lakes. Ojek rides are common in this area and can be arranged through locals. The cost for this short trip to the lakes is approximately IDR 30,000 to IDR 50,000, depending on negotiation. Make sure to confirm the price before starting your journey.
Walking
If you prefer a more adventurous approach, you can hike from Mogeya to the Paniai Lakes. The distance is about 5-7 km and will take roughly 1-2 hours, depending on your pace. Make sure to wear sturdy shoes and carry enough water, as the terrain can be challenging.
