To reach Preparation Canyon State Park from any point in the Historic Hills Scenic Byway, start by locating Highway 30. Head west on Highway 30 until you reach the intersection with Highway 183. Turn north onto Highway 183 and continue to follow it until you reach the town of Moorhead. Once in Moorhead, look for 340th St. and turn left. Follow 340th St for approximately 5 miles until you see the signs for Preparation Canyon State Park on your right. Note that there may be a nominal parking fee of around $5 for day use.

Public Transportation
Unfortunately, public transportation options are limited in this rural area. The best option is to take a bus to the nearest major city, such as Council Bluffs or Omaha, and then rent a car or use a rideshare service to reach Preparation Canyon State Park. From Council Bluffs, you would need to drive northwest on Highway 183 towards Moorhead, then follow the directions above. Be prepared for additional costs for the bus fare and car rental.

Bicycle
If you prefer biking, you can take a scenic ride along the Historic Hills Scenic Byway. From your location, find the nearest bike-friendly road that leads to Highway 30. Once you reach Highway 30, you can bike west towards Moorhead. This route may take longer depending on your starting point, but it offers beautiful views of the landscape. Ensure you have proper cycling gear and water, and note that it might be necessary to carry your bike along some less accessible areas. There are no fees for biking into the park.

Preparation Canyon State Park is best accessed by car or bike due to its rural location. If you are already nearby and wish to hike, ensure you are on a safe walking path leading to the park along 340th St. However, this is not recommended for tourists unfamiliar with the area, as there are no designated walking paths directly leading to the park from the Historic Hills Scenic Byway. Always prioritize your safety and check the distance before setting out on foot.
