If you are traveling by car from any point along the Historic Hills Scenic Byway, head towards the nearest major highway, which is likely Highway 63 or I-80. From Highway 63, take the exit for I-80 East towards Des Moines. Continue on I-80 for approximately 90 miles until you reach Exit 137A for I-235 North towards Des Moines. Once on I-235, travel for about 5 miles and take Exit 8B for E 14th St. Merge onto E 14th St, then turn left onto E Locust St. The State Historical Building will be on your right at 600 E Locust St, Des Moines, IA 50319. Parking is available nearby, but may incur a fee depending on the area.

For those using public transportation, you can take a Greyhound or Jefferson Lines bus to Des Moines, which may have stops along the Historic Hills Scenic Byway. Upon arrival at the Des Moines bus station, you can use the local DART transit system. Board the Route 60 bus towards East Village. Get off at the E Locust St & E 6th St stop. From there, it's a short walk east on E Locust St. The State Historical Building will be on your right at 600 E Locust St, Des Moines, IA 50319.
