Discover more about Danish Windmill

Located in Elk Horn, Iowa, the Danish Windmill is more than just a historical landmark; it's a living piece of Danish culture. Originally constructed in Nørre Snede, Denmark, in 1848, the windmill was carefully dismantled and transported to Elk Horn in 1976 to honor the town's large Danish population and the U.S. Bicentennial. Elk Horn, recognized as the largest rural Danish settlement in the United States, was a natural fit for this iconic structure. Harvey Sornson, an Elk Horn resident, conceived the idea after visiting Denmark and seeing numerous windmills. The community quickly rallied behind the project, raising the necessary funds to purchase, dismantle, and ship the mill to Iowa. Over 300 volunteers helped rebuild the mill, ensuring its preservation for future generations. A Danish law was subsequently passed, prohibiting the export of other windmills, making Elk Horn's mill truly unique. Today, the 60-foot-tall windmill operates as a museum, grinding grain into flour using wind power. Visitors can explore the inner workings of the mill, climb to the top for panoramic views, and learn about its history through informational videos and exhibits. The site also features a Danish gift shop, the charming Morning Star Chapel (once dubbed the world's tiniest church), and Viking Hjem, a replica of a Viking smithy's home. The mill serves as a focal point for educating visitors about wind energy, agriculture, and Danish heritage.
