From Erbil's city center, the Citadel is easily accessible on foot. It's located approximately 1 km from the city center, making it a pleasant 15-minute walk. Follow the main roads and look for signs directing you to the Citadel.

Taxi

Taxis are readily available throughout Erbil. A short taxi ride from most central locations to the Citadel will typically cost between 4,000 to 6,000 IQD. Negotiate the fare beforehand or ensure the driver uses the meter.

If driving, follow signs for the city center and the Citadel. Designated parking areas are available near the back entrance. Parking fees typically range from 1,000 to 2,000 IQD.

This UNESCO World Heritage site is believed to be one of the oldest continuously inhabited settlements in the world, with evidence of occupation possibly dating back to the 5th millennium BC. The Citadel has been home to Sumerians, Assyrians, Babylonians, Persians, and more.As you approach the Citadel, you'll be struck by its imposing presence. The Citadel occupies an oval area of 430 by 340 meters, rising 25 to 32 meters above the surrounding landscape. A stroll through its maze of alleyways reveals traditional brick courtyard houses and historical sites like the Mulla Afandi Mosque and the ancient hammam. The Kurdish Textile Museum showcases the region's rich textile heritage.From the Citadel's highest point, enjoy panoramic views of Erbil, a vibrant tapestry of ancient history and modern life. The Citadel is more than just a historical monument; it's a living symbol of Kurdish identity, hosting cultural events and festivals that celebrate Kurdish traditions.
