Erbil Citadel, a UNESCO World Heritage site, stands as a remarkable testament to human history and resilience. This ancient tell, rising between 25 and 32 meters (82 and 105 ft) above the surrounding plain, has been inhabited for potentially 8,000 years. The Citadel's strategic location has made it a focal point for various civilizations, including the Sumerians, Assyrians, and Ottomans. Throughout its long history, the Erbil Citadel has been a melting pot of cultures and religions. Mosques, churches, and synagogues once stood side-by-side within its walls. The Citadel's unique fan-like pattern, dating back to the late Ottoman phase, reflects its organic growth over centuries. Traditional brick courtyard houses, a hammam (bathhouse), and the Mulla Afandi Mosque (rebuilt on the site of a 19th-century mosque) add to the Citadel's architectural richness. Today, the Erbil Citadel is undergoing extensive restoration and revitalization efforts. While it's no longer fully residential, a few families still live within its walls, preserving a living connection to the past. Visitors can explore the Citadel's narrow streets, discover hidden corners, and soak up the atmosphere of this ancient city. The Kurdish Textile Museum, located at the Citadel's south end, showcases the region's rich weaving heritage. From the top of the Citadel, panoramic views of Erbil and its surroundings offer a breathtaking perspective on this historic landscape.
