    Kirkuk Citadel, a historical fortress in the heart of Kirkuk, Iraq, is considered the city's oldest section. Rising 40 meters (130 ft) above the Khasa River on a plateau, the citadel's origins are debated, with some historians attributing the oldest parts to the Gutian people around 3,500 years ago, while others believe it was constructed by the Assyrian king Ashurnasirpal II between 884 and 858 BCE. King Seleucus I Nicator fortified it with a strong rampart featuring 72 towers.The citadel has been a melting pot of cultures and religions throughout its history. It once housed a Jewish temple, later transformed into a Christian church and finally a Muslim mosque. The Great Mosque, completed in the 13th century CE, the Green Dome, and the Prophet Daniel Mosque, believed to contain the Tomb of Daniel, are among its notable structures.In 2021, the 42.5-hectare (105-acre) citadel was added to UNESCO's tentative list of World Heritage Sites. Despite facing damage in the late 1990s and subsequent renovations, the Kirkuk Citadel remains a symbol of unity and a testament to the city's enduring legacy.
