Construction on the palace began around 836 AD. The palace is located on a bluff overlooking the Tigris River.Samarra was founded in 836 AD by Caliph Al-Mu'tasim, becoming the capital and a center for Islamic art, culture and architecture. Qasr al-Khalifa was part of a larger complex that included barracks, administrative offices, and even a racecourse. The palace itself was lavishly decorated with carved stucco, wall paintings, wooden panels, marble, and glass.Visitors can explore the expansive grounds and appreciate the palace complex, which includes gardens that create a peaceful atmosphere.
