Grand Festivities Square: Baghdad's Celebration Hub

Grand Festivities Square ( ساحة الاحتفالات الكبرى, Sahat al-Ahtifalat al-Kubra) is Baghdad's main public square, designed for large celebrations and national events. Constructed in 1986 by Saddam Hussein's government, it was intended to commemorate Iraq's victory in the Iran-Iraq War. The square is located in al-Zawra'a Park, near the Green Zone, a site chosen for its symbolic value, as it is believed to be where Muslim Arabs defeated the Persians in 636 CE.The square includes a vast parade ground, a reviewing pavilion, and a reflecting pool. The Victory Arches, also known as the Swords of Qādisīyah, mark the entrances to the square and are a well-known Baghdad landmark. These arches consist of two massive hands holding swords. The Monument to the Unknown Soldier is also nearby, honoring those who died in war.In June 2023, after being closed for 20 years, the square reopened, with the rehabilitation of cultural locations like Al-Mansour Cinema, Al-Mansour Theater, and the Fine Art Hall. Today, the square hosts festivals and artistic activities, aiming to revive Baghdad's historical cultural role. Visitors can experience the local culture, enjoy street food, and witness traditional performances.
