The Martyr Monument, or Al-Shaheed Monument, stands as a powerful reminder of Iraq's past and a tribute to those who sacrificed their lives. Constructed between 1981 and 1983, during the Iran-Iraq War, the monument was designed by Iraqi sculptor Ismail Fatah Al Turk and architect Saman Kamal. It was initially dedicated to the soldiers who fell during that conflict but has since become a memorial for all Iraqis who have died in wars.The monument's design is both striking and symbolic. A 132-foot tall arabesque dome, reminiscent of Abbasid architecture, is covered in teal-colored ceramic tiles. The dome is split in half, with the two sections offset from each other. One half shelters a circular pool, while the other protects an Iraqi flag and an eternal flame, representing the martyrs' sacrifice. Beneath the monument, visitors can explore a museum, library, gallery, and lecture hall, offering further insight into the Iran-Iraq War and its impact on Iraqi society.The surrounding area features parks, playgrounds, walkways, bridges, and a man-made lake, creating a space for reflection and remembrance.
