Liberation Square, known locally as Saha al-Tahrir, is more than just a park; it is a historical and cultural landmark in the heart of Baghdad. This expansive open space serves as a gathering point for locals and visitors alike, offering a glimpse into the vibrant life of the city. With its lush greenery and well-maintained pathways, the square provides a serene retreat from the bustling streets that surround it.The square was established in the mid-20th century to symbolize Iraq's modern identity, with “Tahrir” meaning liberation in Arabic, commemorating freedom from British occupation. Over the years, Tahrir Square has been a venue for public celebrations, political events, and civil demonstrations. The square features the iconic Freedom Monument (Nasb al-Hurriyah), designed by Iraqi sculptor Jawad Saleem in 1961, representing the country's liberation struggle. The garden at the square was first established by King Ghazi and was originally known as the Garden of King Ghazi, later changed to al-Umma Garden ("Garden of the Nation") and is recognized as one of the most important features of the square. It is surrounded on both sides by the Nasb al-Hurriyya monument, and a large painting done by Iraqi artist Faiq Hassan. A third artistic sculpture called "The Mother Statue" is also located in the garden. Due to the artistic nature of the garden, it is recognized as a cultural center in the city and part of its social life. The area around Tahrir Square includes important government buildings and commercial properties and serves as a central hub for public transportation. The square has witnessed key events, including demonstrations during the 2011 Arab Spring and the 2019 Iraqi protests.
