The Monument to the Unknown Soldier in Baghdad stands as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by Iraqi soldiers, particularly those who fell during the Iran-Iraq War. Constructed between 1979 and 1982, the monument was part of a Ba'athist government initiative to instill national pride and immortalize Saddam Hussein's leadership.The monument's design, a collaboration between Italian architect Marcello D'Olivo and Iraqi sculptor Khaled al-Rahal, features a large, cantilevered dome representing a traditional shield (dira'a) falling from the grasp of a dying warrior. The dome, inclined at 12 degrees and 42 meters in diameter, is clad in copper with an inner surface of steel and copper pyramidal modules. Beneath the shield, a cube of seven metal layers symbolizes the seven levels of Jannah (Islamic heaven), with red acrylic sheets representing the blood of fallen soldiers.The monument sits atop an artificial hill and includes a spiral tower reminiscent of the Samarra minaret. Red granite platforms lead to the dome and cube. An underground museum displays artifacts and information about Iraq's military conflicts, providing context to the soldiers' stories. Though reports suggest the museum is unlit, visitors can still view the interior through light shining from above.
