Sherwana Castle, or Shirwanah Castle, is situated at the entrance of Kalar, near the Sirwan River, in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. Constructed in 1866 by Mohammed Pasha Jaff, the castle served as both a residence and an administrative center for the Jaff tribe. The castle's strategic location allowed for monitoring the surrounding area.The castle consists of a basement, two floors, an octagonal hall, and a museum displaying artifacts excavated from the site. These artifacts represent various periods, including the Kassite, Sasanian, Umayyad, and Abbasid eras. The castle has undergone several restorations, including one in 2018 after an earthquake in 2017 caused significant damage.Visitors can explore the castle's architecture, climb the stairs to enjoy panoramic views, and delve into Kurdish history within its walls. At night, the castle is illuminated with colorful lights, enhancing its beauty. The castle is known locally as "Dli Garmiyan," meaning "the Heart of Garmiyan," reflecting its significance to the region.
