    To reach Eridu via public transportation, begin in Nasiriyah, the capital of the Dhi Qar Governorate. Take a shared taxi or minibus from Nasiriyah to Al-Qadisiyyah; the fare is approximately 1,000 IQD. From Al-Qadisiyyah, take another shared taxi directly to Eridu for about 1,500 IQD. The archaeological site is located at RX8V+PW9, Dhi Qar Governorate. Be aware that public transport options may be limited, and travel times can vary.

    If driving, start from Nasiriyah and head south on Route 8 towards Dhi Qar Governorate. After about 15 kilometers, turn right towards Eridu and continue for approximately 5 kilometers until you reach the site at RX8V+PW9, Dhi Qar Governorate. Parking is available near the site. Ensure your vehicle is fueled, as service stations are limited on these routes.

Eridu, now known as Tell Abu Shahrain, is considered by many to be the oldest city in the world, dating back to around 5400 BC. Located in the Dhi Qar Governorate of Iraq, it stands as a testament to the dawn of urban civilization in Mesopotamia. According to Sumerian mythology, Eridu was created by the gods as the starting point of civilization.The city was home to the Abzu temple of Enki (later known as Ea), the Sumerian god of water, wisdom, and magic. Enki was believed to have founded the city and to reside in Abzu, an aquifer from which all life stemmed. The bright star Canopus represented Eridu in ancient Mesopotamian star catalogs.Eridu was initially located near the Persian Gulf, but due to the accumulation of silt over millennia, the ruins are now inland. Archaeological excavations have revealed a large oval mound containing the remains of houses, temples, and cemeteries from the Ubaid period (6500–3800 BCE). The most prominent structure is the Ziggurat of Enki, one of the best-known and preserved Mesopotamian temples.Visitors can explore the ancient city layout and marvel at artifacts that offer insights into the daily life and religious practices of the Sumerians. Eridu provides a unique glimpse into the foundations of agriculture, writing, and governance, which laid the groundwork for modern society.
