    Getting There

    Car

    If driving from Erbil, head southwest on 40th Street (Qasr Street). Follow signs for Shaqlawa onto the Erbil-Shaqlawa road for approximately 30 kilometers. Look for signs indicating 'Mount Korek' and turn onto the winding road leading to the mountain base. Parking is available near the cable car station.

    Public Transport

    From Erbil, take a shared taxi or minibus to Shaqlawa from designated taxi stands. The fare is around 3,000 IQD per person. Upon arriving in Shaqlawa, take a local taxi to Mount Korek for approximately 5,000 IQD. Be sure to arrange return transport.

    Cable Car

    To reach the summit and Korek Mountain Resort, take the Korek Teleferic (cable car) from the Bekhal bottom station. A return ticket costs 10,000 IQD. The ride is approximately 4 km long.

    Mount Korek, or Çîyayê Korek in Kurdish, is a majestic mountain peak located in the Erbil Governorate of the Kurdistan Region in Iraq. Situated approximately 50 kilometers from the Iranian border, it stands as a testament to the natural beauty of the region, offering panoramic views that stretch for miles. The mountain is a popular tourist destination, offering a variety of activities throughout the year. During the warmer months, visitors can enjoy hiking along scenic trails that vary in difficulty, making it accessible for both seasoned hikers and casual walkers. The area is also rich in cultural history, with local legends and stories adding an enchanting layer to any visit. In winter, Mount Korek transforms into a snowy wonderland, attracting skiers and snowboarders. The Korek Mountain Resort & Spa, developed by the Darin Group, features a four-kilometer-long cable car (teleferic) that connects the Bekhal bottom station to the mountain. The resort includes villas, restaurants, and cafes, offering a cool retreat from the region's hot temperatures. Historically, Mount Korek was selected as the location for the Erbil Observatory in 1973, intended to be the Middle East's first major observatory. Although the project was damaged during the Iran-Iraq War, the remains of the observatory still stand, offering a glimpse into a grand scientific ambition.
