Discover more about Erbil Citadel

Erbil Citadel, locally called Qelat, is more than just a historical site; it's a living testament to the enduring legacy of Mesopotamia. This UNESCO World Heritage Site, rising between 82 and 105 feet (25 and 32 meters) above the surrounding city, is believed to be one of the oldest continuously inhabited settlements in the world. Occupying a roughly oval area of 1,410 by 1,120 feet (430 by 340 meters), the Citadel's history stretches back to possibly the Neolithic period, with definitive evidence of occupation from the 5th millennium BC. It appears in historical records around 2300 BC and gained prominence during the Neo-Assyrian period. Over the centuries, it has been controlled by various empires, including Sumerians, Assyrians, Sassanids, Mongols, and Ottomans. Inside the Citadel, visitors can explore historical houses, the Kurdish Textile Museum, and remnants of Ottoman-era architecture. The Mulla Afandi Mosque, rebuilt on the site of a 19th-century predecessor, stands as a testament to the Citadel's religious history. The Citadel also offers panoramic views of Erbil. Ongoing restoration efforts aim to preserve the Citadel's rich heritage while revitalizing its cultural and social significance. Once a bustling residential area, the Citadel's last permanent residents were moved out in 2007 to allow for systematic excavation and renovation. Today, it remains a vibrant community space, attracting visitors who come to immerse themselves in its architecture, cultural significance, and historical relevance.
