The Imam Ali Holy Shrine, also known as the Mosque of Ali, is a testament to centuries of devotion and architectural grandeur. Revered by Shia Muslims as the fourth holiest Islamic site, it is believed to house the tomb of Ali ibn Abi Talib, a central figure in Islam. Sunni Muslims also hold Ali in high esteem as the fourth Rashid Caliph. According to Shia beliefs, the remains of Adam and Noah are also buried within the mosque.The shrine's history dates back to the 8th century when the first structure was built over Imam Ali's grave. Throughout the centuries, it has been rebuilt and expanded by various rulers, each leaving their mark on its architectural evolution. The current design largely reflects the Safavid era in the 17th century, with significant contributions from the polymath Baha' al-din al-'Amili.The shrine boasts a stunning double-shelled onion-shaped dome, soaring to 42 meters (138 ft), flanked by twin minarets reaching 38 meters (125 ft). The dome, iwan (a vaulted space that opens onto a courtyard), and minarets are adorned with gold-coated copper plates, originally decorated with green and blue ceramic tiles. The interior is equally breathtaking, featuring intricate mirror mosaics and ceramic mosaics dating back to the Safavid period.The shrine complex includes a large courtyard surrounded by pointed arch arcades, providing a serene space for reflection. The shrine has five main portals. Recent expansions include the construction of a large courtyard named after Lady Fatima, increasing the shrine's total area to 140,000 square meters.Visiting the Imam Ali Holy Shrine is a deeply spiritual experience.
