The Martyr Monument, or Al-Shaheed Monument, stands as one of Baghdad's most iconic landmarks. Designed by Iraqi sculptor Ismail Fatah al-Turk, with architect Saman Kamal, it commemorates the soldiers who died in the Iran-Iraq War (1980-1988) and has evolved into a memorial for all Iraqi martyrs. Built between 1981 and 1983, the monument consists of a circular platform with a 40-meter tall split turquoise dome, reminiscent of Abbasid-era architecture.
