Discover more about An Plassey

The Plassey Shipwreck is perched dramatically on the rocky shoreline of Inisheer, the smallest of the Aran Islands. The wreck of the MV Plassey has become a must-visit attraction for those seeking adventure, history, and unforgettable views during their trip to the Aran Islands. The MV Plassey, originally named HMS Juliet, was built in 1940 as a naval trawler for the Royal Navy during World War II. In 1951, the Limerick Steamship Company acquired the ship and renamed it Plassey. On March 8, 1960, while sailing through Galway Bay, the Plassey was caught in a severe storm and ran aground on Finnis Rock, just off the coast of Inisheer. The ship was carrying a variety of cargo, including whiskey, stained glass, yarn, biscuits, cookies, and even modern toilets. Miraculously, all eleven crew members were saved thanks to the heroic efforts of the local islanders, who used a rocket-fired breeches buoy to haul them to safety. The sailors were given warm clothes, whisky, and shelter by the locals, who also helped them salvage some of their belongings and wages from the wreck. A few weeks later, another Atlantic storm lifted the ship off the rocks and threw it further inland, where it still sits today. The Plassey Shipwreck gained international fame when it appeared in the opening credits of the beloved 1990s Channel 4 TV series, Father Ted. Today, the wreck is a popular destination for photographers, history enthusiasts, and anyone seeking a unique experience on Inisheer. The shipwreck can be reached by walking or cycling from the pier, along a scenic route that offers stunning views of the ocean and the island's landscape.
