Discover more about Glenmacnass Waterfall

Glenmacnass Waterfall is a striking 80-meter-high waterfall nestled in the Wicklow Mountains National Park. The name Glenmacnass translates from Irish to "the glen of the hollow of the waterfall". The waterfall is formed by the Glenmacnass River, which originates on the slopes of Mullaghcleevaun, the 15th highest peak in Ireland, and flows into the Avonmore River. The Glenmacnass Valley itself is a U-shaped glacial valley, carved out during the Ice Age. The valley's geology features smooth porphyritic granite bedrock near the waterfall, transitioning to dark, jagged schist rock further down. The area provides a dramatic sense of isolation and beauty. Easily accessible from the R115 (Old Military Road) between Sally Gap and Laragh, Glenmacnass Waterfall is a favored destination for tourists, photographers, and hikers. A convenient car park is located near the top of the falls. While there isn't a formal trail to the base of the waterfall and access may involve crossing private property, the views from the roadside are impressive. Visitors can also enjoy scenic walks along the Old Military Road, with views overlooking the valley. Nearby attractions include Glendalough, with its early medieval monastic settlement.
