    From Coleraine, take the A2 towards Castlerock. Bishop's Gate is located approximately 7 miles west of Coleraine. Limited free parking is available directly at Bishop's Gate. Alternatively, paid parking (£7.50 during winter, £10 all day) is available at Lion's Gate, a short distance away.

  • Public Transport

    Take the Ulsterbus 234 from Coleraine to Derry/Londonderry and alight at the crossroads near Bishop's Gate. From the bus stop, it is a short walk to the gate. A single bus fare from Coleraine is approximately £3-£4.

  • Walking

    From Castlerock train station, it's a 2 kilometer walk to Downhill Demesne. You can walk along the A2 or take the Ulsterbus 134 from Castlerock to the Mussenden Road stop. From there, follow the signs to Bishop's Gate.

Bishop's Gate stands as a fine example of neo-classical architecture and serves as a gateway to the Downhill Demesne. Constructed in 1783, the gate was designed by Michael Shanahan. During the Earl Bishop's lifetime, it was known as the 'Coleraine Battalion Gate'. The gate is built from cut sandstone and features a pedimented arch with side wings. Bishop's Gate provides access to the Black Glen and Portvantage Glen, offering a variety of trails, a fish pond, and picnic areas. The surrounding Downhill Demesne offers a dramatic coastal landscape steeped in history and nature. Visitors can explore the ruins of Downhill House, stroll through the gardens, and wander through the arboretum. Nearby attractions include the Mussenden Temple, perched on a cliff edge, and Downhill Beach, where scenes from Game of Thrones were filmed.
