Discover more about Carrowkeel Passage Tombs

Carrowkeel Passage Tombs, located in County Sligo, represent one of Ireland's most significant Neolithic complexes. Constructed between 3200 and 2400 BC, these passage tombs are situated on the Bricklieve Mountains, offering commanding views of the surrounding landscape, including Lough Arrow. The name 'Bricklieve' derives from the Irish 'Breac Sliabh', meaning 'speckled mountains'. The Carrowkeel complex consists of fourteen passage cairns, each identified with a letter. These cairns are spread across several hills, forming a part of the Bricklieve Mountain range. The site was excavated in 1911, revealing artifacts such as pottery, beads, and bone pins, as well as both cremated and unburnt human remains. The pottery discovered here was named 'Carrowkeel Ware'. Visitors can explore several of the cairns, including Cairns G and K, which are among the most accessible. Cairn G features a roof box similar to that found at Newgrange, aligned with the midsummer sunset. Cairn K has a passage oriented towards Queen Maeve's cairn on Knocknarea. The remains of a Neolithic village, consisting of over 160 circular stone foundations, can be found on a plateau near the tombs. Visiting Carrowkeel offers a unique opportunity to connect with Ireland's ancient history and appreciate the ingenuity of its Neolithic inhabitants. The site's elevated location provides breathtaking views, making it a rewarding experience for history enthusiasts and nature lovers alike.
