Getting There

  • Driving

    From Sligo town, head southwest on the N4. Continue on the N4 until you reach the town of Boyle. From Boyle, follow the signs for the R295 towards Ballymote. Before the Eastern Harps GAA pitch, turn left towards St. Kevin's RC Church in Keash village. Park near the church and follow the Keash Hill Trail. Note that there are no petrol stations or EV charging points in Keash village.

  • Walking

    From the car park at St. Kevin's RC Church in Keash village, begin the Keash Hill Trail. Pass through the kissing gate at the entrance to the walk. The trail is a short but steep climb of 650m to the caves, taking approximately 20 minutes. Exercise caution on the brow of the hill, as the incline is steep and can be slippery. Walking boots are recommended.

The Keshcorran Caves, located near the village of Keash in County Sligo, are a captivating historical landmark with a rich tapestry of archaeology, mythology, and natural beauty. Carved into the western face of Keshcorran Hill, also known as Kesh Mountain, these sixteen caves present a striking visual, appearing as dark openings against the light limestone.Archaeological evidence suggests the caves and the cairn on the summit of Keshcorran were part of a ritual complex in the Neolithic period. The caves may have been used for excarnation, where bodies were left to decompose before the bones were interred in tombs. Excavations in the early 20th century unearthed significant animal remains, including those of brown bear, arctic lemming, Irish elk, and grey wolf, dating back to around 10,000 BC. Human remains and artifacts from the Neolithic period have also been discovered.In Irish mythology, the caves are often depicted as otherworldly places. Legend has it that Cormac mac Airt, a celebrated High King of Ireland, was born near Keshcorran and raised by a wolf in one of the caves. The caves also feature in stories of Fionn mac Cumhaill.Visitors can explore the caves via the Keash Hill Trail, a 3.4km waymarked route starting from Keash village. The trail is steep in sections, so sturdy footwear is recommended.
