Discover more about Merlin Park Woods

Merlin Park Woods, located on the eastern edge of Galway City, is a sprawling 80-hectare woodland offering a tranquil retreat from urban life. Originally part of the Blake family's estate since the 17th century, the woods were generously donated to the city in 1946. Named after the family's ancestral home, believed to be the birthplace of the legendary wizard Merlin, the woods now stand as one of Ireland's most diverse urban woodlands. The woods boast a rich tapestry of native and exotic trees, including oak, ash, birch, and beech, some of which are over 200 years old. In spring and summer, the woodland floor comes alive with wildflowers like bluebells and wood anemones. Keep an eye out for the diverse fauna, including foxes, badgers, squirrels, and a variety of bird species. Lucky visitors might even spot bats flitting through the trees at dusk. Explore the various trails, including the 3km Loop Trail and the 1.5km Nature Trail, each offering unique perspectives on the woods' ecology and history. Along the way, discover historical features such as the ruins of Merlin Castle, a 15th or 16th-century tower house. The castle even features a Sheela na Gig, a grotesque female figure, carved upside down on one of the second-floor windows. Merlin Park Woods is accessible year-round and offers free admission, making it an ideal destination for nature lovers, history enthusiasts, and families alike. With a playground, car park, and benches throughout the park, it caters to visitors of all ages and abilities.
