Discover more about Altamont Gardens

Altamont Gardens, often called the 'jewel in Ireland's gardening crown,' offers visitors a tranquil escape into a world of natural beauty and history. Spanning 16 hectares (40 acres), these gardens showcase a seamless blend of formal and informal styles, creating a unique and enchanting atmosphere. The gardens' history dates back to the 18th century, with influences from families like the St. Georges, Doyles, and Borrors, each leaving their mark. It's believed the house was built on the site of a medieval nunnery. The gardens feature a diverse collection of plants, including native trees, exotic shrubs, and the renowned rhododendrons planted by Feilding Lecky Watson. Explore the sculpted yews and lawns that slope down to a romantic lake, created during the Irish Famine to provide employment. Wander through the Arboretum, Bog Garden, and Ice Age Glen, discovering ancient oaks and unique stone formations. The River Slaney borders the gardens, offering picturesque riverside walks. Visit in the spring to witness the magical display of snowdrops, or in the summer to experience the glorious perfume of roses and herbaceous plants. While the Altamont House remains closed to the public with hopes for future restoration, the gardens themselves provide a captivating experience. The Walled Garden, operated separately, features the Corona North Commemorative Border, honoring the late owner who dedicated her life to the gardens.
