Discover more about Shannon Pot

The Shannon Pot, or *Log na Sionna* ('hollow of the Shannon' in Irish), is a captivating pool nestled in the karst landscape of County Cavan. This naturally fluctuating, aquifer-fed pool is the recognized source of the majestic River Shannon, which journeys 280km to the Shannon Estuary in Limerick. Legend claims the river's name originates from Síonnan, granddaughter of the Celtic sea god. Tales recount her quest for wisdom at the pool, where either eating forbidden fruit or seeking the Salmon of Wisdom angered the waters, causing them to rise and drown her, thus forming the river. This mythology adds an ethereal quality to the site, connecting visitors to Ireland's ancient past. Historically significant, the Shannon Pot may have been a site of ancient rituals. Archaeological evidence suggests similar springs were revered by early inhabitants, possibly used for ceremonies honoring water deities. The pool's Gaelic name, *Legnashinna*, further emphasizes its importance as a significant place in Celtic times. Today, the Shannon Pot is part of the Marble Arch Caves Global Geopark, a UNESCO-recognized area. Visitors can explore walking trails offering views of the Cuilcagh Mountains and surrounding countryside. Interpretive signs provide insights into the site's geology, mythology, and history. The area is also a haven for biodiversity, with diverse plant and animal species. Ongoing construction of an interpretative center is expected to conclude in early 2026, promising an enhanced visitor experience with detailed exhibits on the river's geography, history, and mythology.
