Discover more about Doolin Cave

Venture into the heart of the Burren at Doolin Cave, a captivating natural attraction near Doolin village in County Clare. Discovered in 1952 by British cavers, the cave remained hidden for millennia until its exploration. Today, visitors can descend 125 steps (equivalent to an 8-story building) into this subterranean world to witness the Great Stalactite, one of the longest free-hanging stalactites in Europe. The guided tour takes you through chambers adorned with fascinating formations, including stalactites, stalagmites, helictites, and bell jar formations. The highlight is undoubtedly the Great Stalactite, a breathtaking calcite formation that stretches over 7.3 meters (23 feet). Weighing an estimated 10 tonnes, it hangs suspended from the cave ceiling like a chandelier, a testament to the slow, patient work of nature over hundreds of thousands of years. Above ground, explore the 1km looped Eco-Trail, a farmland nature walk that showcases the area's flora and fauna, offering a bird's-eye view of Ballinalacken Castle and the surrounding countryside. The visitor centre houses a gift shop where you can find unique souvenirs, including Doolin Cave Pottery made from local glacial clay. Enjoy refreshments at the on-site café, offering delicious treats and light lunches. Doolin Cave offers a unique and educational experience, combining natural beauty with geological wonder.
