Discover more about Loop Head Lighthouse

Loop Head Lighthouse, standing proud on the westernmost point of County Clare, has been a vital navigational aid for centuries. The original lighthouse, a simple coal-burning brazier, was established in 1670. It was one of the first cottage-style lighthouses in Ireland. In 1802, a traditional tower replaced the cottage. The current tower dates back to 1854 and was designed by George Halpin. Loop Head Lighthouse is more than just a historic structure; it's an experience. Visitors can take a guided tour to the top of the 23-meter tower, where, weather permitting, they can enjoy stunning views stretching as far south as the Blasket Islands and north to the Twelve Pins in Connemara. The lighthouse grounds include an exhibition in the Lightkeeper's Cottage, detailing the history of the lighthouse and the lives of its keepers. The surrounding Loop Head Peninsula offers dramatic cliffs, sea stacks, and abundant wildlife. It's a prime location for spotting whales, dolphins, and seals. Birdwatchers will delight in the numerous seabirds that call the cliffs home. The peninsula is part of the Wild Atlantic Way, offering breathtaking coastal scenery and charming villages to explore. Loop Head is one of three locations in Ireland that broadcasts a DGPS signal, which improves the accuracy and integrity of the GPS navigation and position-fixing systems used by mariners.
