Moher Tower at Hag's Head Travel Guide

Perched on the dramatic Hag's Head, Moher Tower is a stoic stone ruin with a rich history. Built around 1808, the tower served as a strategic watchtower during the Napoleonic Wars, when fears of invasion swept across Europe. It was constructed from the remains of an ancient promontory fort named Mothar or Moher, which stood until 1780.The tower's architecture is simple yet sturdy, featuring a square structure with two bartizans on the eastern wall and one on the western side. Facing the Atlantic, it once housed a fireplace on two floors and a dry stone roof, though the roof has mostly caved in over time. Today, the roofless tower is home to various seabirds, including puffins, gulls, and crows, who seek shelter within its walls.Visitors are welcome to explore the tower's ruins and admire the internal architecture, but caution is advised due to the uneven terrain. From the tower, panoramic views unfold, showcasing the rugged coastline, the vast Atlantic, and the dramatic Cliffs of Moher stretching to the north.
