Discover more about Donegal Castle

Donegal Castle, located in the center of Donegal Town, is steeped in Irish history. Originally constructed in 1474 by Red Hugh O'Donnell I, chieftain of the O'Donnell clan, it served as a personal fortress and a symbol of authority. The castle remained in the O'Donnell family for over two centuries, until the Flight of the Earls in the early 17th century. Following the O'Donnell's departure, the castle was granted to English Captain Sir Basil Brooke during the Plantation of Ulster. Brooke significantly altered the castle, adding a Jacobean manor house and other features in the English style. The O'Donnells, before leaving, damaged the tower house to prevent its use against the Gaelic clans, but Brooke quickly restored it. The Brooke family owned the castle until the 1670s, after which it fell into disrepair. In 1898, the castle was placed under the care of the Office of Public Works, and a meticulous restoration began in the early 1990s. Today, visitors can explore the restored castle, viewing the blend of Gaelic and Jacobean architectural styles. Highlights include the 15th-century keep, the Jacobean wing with its ornate fireplace, and the history room, which details the story of the O'Donnell clan. Information panels throughout the castle illuminate its history and owners.
