Castello di Neive: A Journey Through Wine and History
Discover the art of winemaking at Castello di Neive, where history and tradition blend in the heart of Piedmont's Langhe region.
Castello di Neive is more than just a winery; it's a journey through time and tradition, nestled in the heart of Neive, one of Italy's most charming villages. The estate, owned by the Stupino family, boasts a history rooted in centuries of winemaking. Giacomo Stupino, the family patriarch, began acquiring prime vineyards in the area, setting the stage for the Castello's future. The Castello itself, dating back to 1735, adds a layer of historical significance to the experience. Its cellars, some built in the 1750s, have witnessed the evolution of winemaking, including the creation of one of the first dry Nebbiolo wines. Visitors can explore these cellars, see the old underground tunnel, and even view the ice cellar where some of the oldest bottles rest. Today, Castello di Neive spans 150 acres, with 25 hectares dedicated to vineyards. The estate produces around 12,000 cases of wine annually, all sourced from its own vineyards. The 'Casetta del Castello' serves as the winery's touring and tasting center, offering visitors a chance to discover the vineyards, wines, and the Stupino family's winemaking philosophy. Wine tastings are led by qualified sommeliers who provide insights into the wines' characteristics and production techniques. Castello di Neive is known for its Barbaresco, crafted from Nebbiolo grapes grown in some of the most respected vineyards in the Barbaresco DOCG. The winery also produces other notable wines, such as Dolcetto d'Alba and Moscato d'Asti. A visit offers a blend of historical exploration, wine appreciation, and immersion in the beautiful Langhe landscape.
