Discover more about Torrione prenestino

The Torrione Prenestino, located on Via Prenestina in Rome's Tiburtino district, is a significant, yet often overlooked, example of Roman funerary architecture. This imposing circular mausoleum dates back to the late 1st century BC and is one of the largest tombs of its type in Rome. The monument is integrated into the Parco del Torrione Prenestino, offering a blend of historical significance and recreational space. Originally, the Torrione Prenestino was a tumulus tomb, featuring a large circular drum filled with earth, creating a cone-shaped mound. The exterior was likely covered in travertine or marble. It is believed that the cone-shaped mound was adorned with cypress trees, similar to the Mausoleums of Augustus and Hadrian, and topped with a statue of the deceased. The tomb's entrance, now walled off, originally led to a cruciform burial chamber via an underground corridor. Despite its grandeur, the Torrione Prenestino has faced numerous challenges throughout its history. The construction of Via Prenestina and the Tangenziale Est (eastern bypass) led to the partial destruction of the outer wall. The earth fill was removed after World War II. Today, the surrounding park provides a green space for locals and visitors alike. The park hosts cultural events, concerts, and community activities, revitalizing the area around this ancient monument.
