Discover more about Tower of Pisa

The Leaning Tower of Pisa, known in Italian as Torre Pendente di Pisa, is more than just a quirky architectural marvel; it's a symbol of Pisa's rich history and enduring spirit. Located in the Piazza del Duomo, also known as the Piazza dei Miracoli (Square of Miracles), the tower is part of a UNESCO World Heritage site that includes the Pisa Cathedral, Baptistery, and Camposanto Monumentale. Construction of the tower began in 1173 as a bell tower for the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta. However, after only five years, as the third floor was being built, the tower began to lean due to the area's soft ground. This unstable foundation, composed of a dense clay mixture, was only three meters deep and couldn't support the structure's weight. Construction was halted for nearly a century as Pisa was involved in various wars. Over the centuries, engineers attempted to correct the lean, but their efforts often exacerbated the problem. The tower has 294 steps to reach the top. From the top, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of Pisa and the surrounding area. Today, the tower's tilt is approximately 3.97 degrees, thanks to stabilization work conducted between 1993 and 2001. The tower has seven bells, each tuned to a different note of the major music scale. Climbing the tower is a unique experience, but it's important to note that children under 8 are not allowed to climb, and those between 8 and 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Tickets can be purchased online in advance or on-site, but advance booking is highly recommended, especially during peak season.
