The Ancient Spanish Mill, locally known as Mulino Spagnolo, is a striking reminder of Orbetello's layered past, gracefully emerging from the tranquil waters of its lagoon. Constructed in the 16th century during Spanish rule, it was part of a series of nine mills strategically built to grind wheat for the city's inhabitants. This ensured self-sufficiency, particularly crucial for a garrison town under the control of the Spanish State of the Presidi. The mill's design cleverly utilized both wind and hydraulic power, showcasing the advanced engineering of the time. Wheat flour was transported to the mainland via small boats called 'barchini'.
