Discover more about Rocca Aldobrandesca

Rocca Aldobrandesca, located at the entrance of Sovana, stands as a striking reminder of the town's medieval past. Built around the 11th century on pre-existing Etruscan structures, the fortress was initially the seat and symbol of the Aldobrandeschi family, who held dominion over the area until the late 13th century. The fortress was strategically important, controlling the surrounding lands. During the Aldobrandeschi period, the fortification became part of the County of Sovana. In 1293, it became part of the Orsini County of Pitigliano, leading to a period of neglect as the capital shifted to Pitigliano. In the early fifteenth century, Sovana was conquered by the Sienese and became part of the Republic of Siena. The fortress was restored during this time after a century of abandonment. In the second half of the sixteenth century, Sovana and its fortress became part of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany. Cosimo de' Medici initiated some renovations, but the structure continued to degrade. Today, visitors can still see a tower and sections of the walls, complete with corbels and stone arches, as well as the access door. Exploring the site offers not only a historical journey but also scenic views of Sovana and the surrounding landscape. Sovana itself is a quaint village with cobblestone streets, enhancing the allure of the Rocca Aldobrandesca.
