Torre di Poggio Raso, also known as Torre Rivolta, stands as a testament to Tuscany's storied past. Perched on a promontory in the Monti dell'Uccellina, north of Talamone, this coastal tower was strategically constructed to monitor the coastline. Originally built with a square base, it underwent a Renaissance-era restructuring in the 15th century, likely during the Republic of Siena's rule.
In the 16th century, the tower became a defensive outpost for the Grand Duchy of Tuscany, with the Medici family commissioning restoration work to enhance its efficiency. After the unification of Italy, the fortification fell into disrepair and was eventually sold to private owners. Recent restoration efforts have revitalized the tower. The upper section, once an open-air observation deck used to send light signals to nearby towers, is now enclosed by large windows.
Today, Torre di Poggio Raso offers visitors a unique opportunity to step back in time and soak in the stunning natural beauty of the Maremma region. Walking
If you are in Talamone, hiking to Torre di Poggio Raso is a great option. From the center, head southwest on Via della Libertà until you reach Strada Provinciale Talamone. Turn left onto Strada Provinciale and walk for about 4 kilometers. The walk takes approximately 1 hour and offers beautiful views. Remember to wear comfortable shoes and bring water.
Public Transport
To reach Torre di Poggio Raso via public transport, take a train from Grosseto to Talamone. The train journey is approximately 30 minutes. From Talamone station, take Bus Line 1 towards Cannelle. The bus ride takes about 15 minutes. Get off at the stop closest to Torre di Poggio Raso. Bus tickets cost around €1-€3. Check the local timetable in advance as schedules may vary.
Car
If driving from Grosseto, head southwest on the SS1 highway towards Talamone. Continue on the SS1 for about 30 kilometers until the Talamone exit. Follow signs to Talamone, then take Strada Provinciale Talamone towards Cannelle. After about 5 kilometers, you will see signs for Torre di Poggio Raso. There is a small parking area near the site. Parking is free. Be aware that the road can be narrow and winding in some parts.
