Monastero di Astino: A Sanctuary of History and Art

The Monastero di Astino, located in the picturesque Val d'Astino, offers a serene escape just a few kilometers from Bergamo's city center. Founded around 1070 by Vallombrosian monks, the monastery has a rich history, initially serving as a refuge and spiritual center. The complex includes the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, consecrated in 1117, showcasing Romanesque architecture with later Renaissance modifications.Throughout its history, the monastery has undergone several transformations. In the 15th century, it expanded its influence and land holdings. However, in 1797, Napoleon suppressed the monastery, converting it into an asylum and later a farm. After falling into private hands and a period of decline, the Congregazione della Misericordia Maggiore purchased the site in 2007 and began an ambitious restoration project.Today, the Monastero di Astino is a beautifully restored complex that hosts events, exhibitions, and cultural initiatives. Visitors can admire the architecture, including the imposing southwest corner tower, the 15th-century cloister, and the chapels. Inside the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, three altars—the high altar and those of St. Martin and the Evangelists—reflect the site's religious history. Art lovers can appreciate the restored Last Supper by Alessandro Allori.The monastery is surrounded by lush forests, rolling hills, and cultivated fields, offering opportunities for walks and exploring the area. The Val d'Astino itself is an agricultural oasis, promoting biodiversity and sustainable agriculture. Visitors can explore the network of trails, connecting the monastery to Longuelo, the San Martino valley, and the scenic peaks of Bastia and San Vigilio.
