Discover more about Cathedral of Saint Mary of the Purification

The Cathedral of Saint Mary of the Purification, or Cattedrale di Santa Maria della Purificazione, is located in the oldest part of Termoli, Italy, and stands as the town's main religious center. Constructed in the 12th and 13th centuries, the cathedral was built on the remains of a pagan temple dedicated to Castor and Pollux. This blend of historical layers makes it a compelling destination for those interested in art, architecture, and religious history. The cathedral's architecture reflects both Romanesque and Gothic styles. The lower part of the facade showcases the Romanesque Pugliese style, while the upper part, rebuilt after the earthquake of 1456, exhibits Gothic influences. The facade features a rose window and blind double-arched windows adorned with foliage and human figures. Inside, the cathedral is divided into three naves with semicircular apses. Over the centuries, the Cathedral of Saint Mary of the Purification has undergone several restorations due to earthquakes and attacks. During these works, relics of local saints, including Saint Basso and Saint Timothy, were discovered, further adding to the cathedral's spiritual significance. The crypt, part of the original church, houses a sarcophagus with the spoils of San Basso, remains of the ancient facade, and a 13th-century marble slab. The external staircase of the Cathedral is a popular meeting spot, especially during summer evenings.
