    Discover more about Castello D'Evoli

Castello D'Evoli stands as a testament to medieval architecture, strategically positioned on a hilltop in Castropignano. The castle's origins trace back to the Lombard period, around the 11th century, and it was later fortified and transformed by the Normans. From 1345 to the end of the 19th century, the D'Evoli family owned the castle and surrounding territory, undertaking the first major renovations in 1362. The castle's quadrangular layout follows the terrain's morphology and once included a keep and towers. Although much of the castle was removed during the Fascist era to pave local streets, it has since been restored and is open to visitors. Today, visitors can explore the open-air spaces and some ground-floor rooms, which sometimes host events and art exhibitions. Climbing the walls offers panoramic views of Castropignano and the Biferno valley. The castle controlled the Biferno valley, and its strategic location was part of a defensive system that included the Oratino tower. The castle was separated from the town by a moat, which was later filled. The entrance was guarded, and the D'Evoli family coat of arms still adorns the gate. A legend tells of Fata, a local shepherdess who chose to end her life rather than marry the Duke d'Evoli.
