The Foce del Biferno marks the point where the Biferno River, the main river of Molise, flows into the Adriatic Sea. This estuarine environment, spanning approximately 817 hectares, is characterized by a unique blend of freshwater and marine ecosystems. The river originates in the Matese mountains and travels for about 93 kilometers through the Campobasso province. The construction of the Liscione Lake, an artificial basin in the mid-valley, has significantly impacted the river's flow and sediment deposition at the mouth. Today, the Foce del Biferno faces environmental challenges, including erosion, saltwater intrusion, and the threat of building development. Conservation efforts, such as the European Project Life Maestrale, aim to preserve the area's natural heritage and promote sustainable practices.
