Museo Palazzo Pistilli: A Glimpse into Campobasso's Art History

The Museo Palazzo Pistilli, nestled in the heart of Campobasso's historic center, is the city's only state art museum. The museum resides within the beautiful 18th-century Palazzo Pistilli, once a stately home. The collection began with Michele Praitano, who passionately collected art for over fifty years, both in Italy and abroad, and later donated his collection to the state in 2014. The museum's six 'sugar paper' colored rooms display the art collection. The collection also includes works from Giovanni Eliseo and Giuseppe Ottavio Eliseo. The museum displays approximately 160 works spanning from the 17th-century Neapolitan era to a substantial collection of works by Molise artists. The collection emphasizes 19th and 20th-century Neapolitan paintings inspired by realism, impressionism, and classicism. Visitors can also view sculptures, including a 20th-century copy of Venus Medici, Neapolitan majolica, and 18th-century painted ceramics. A multimedia room showcases Molise artists and their works in buildings and churches throughout the region.
