Discover more about Porta Mancina

Porta Mancina, or Porta Santa Cristina, stands as a testament to Campobasso's medieval past. This historical landmark, dating back to the 1300s, is the only one of the city's original gates to retain its ogival (pointed) arch style. The name 'Mancina,' meaning 'left-handed,' likely comes from its position to the left of Porta Maggiore. Constructed in 1374, Porta Mancina provided access to the fields outside the city walls. The gate was strategically important during wartime. Today, Porta Mancina is remarkably well-preserved. The archway rests on large stone corbels and reaches a height of approximately 3.80 meters. An outer structure with a factory arch precedes the gate, and a dwelling sits atop it. Located on Via Porta Mancina, the gate is easily accessible and invites visitors to step back in time as they pass through its ancient stones. The surrounding area offers a taste of authentic Italian life with local shops and eateries.
