Discover more about Riserva Naturale di Collemeluccio

Nestled in the province of Isernia, Molise, the Collemeluccio Nature Reserve stands as a testament to Italy's commitment to preserving its natural heritage. Established in 1971 and recognized as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1977, this 347-hectare sanctuary showcases the beauty and biodiversity of the Apennine Mountains. The reserve's history is as rich as its ecosystems. Once owned by the Duke D'Alessandro di Pescolanciano, the forest was passed down through noble families, including Desiderata Melucci, from whom the name may derive. In 1628, she acquired it from the University of Pietrabbondante. Over the centuries, the forest has been carefully managed, with conservation efforts dating back to the State Forestry Department in 1968. Today, visitors can explore a variety of habitats, including the dominant silver fir forests, remnants of ancient woodlands that once covered the Apennine ridge. Turkey oak, beech, white hornbeam, and other native trees add to the diversity. The undergrowth is lush with hawthorn, holly, and hazel, while clearings reveal wild apple, pear, and plum trees. The reserve is also home to a variety of animal species, including the peregrine falcon, Ortolan bunting, honey buzzard, and red kite. Lucky visitors might spot roe deer, hares, badgers, and even wolves. The Collemeluccio Nature Reserve offers various activities for nature enthusiasts. Hike along marked trails, suitable for all skill levels, and discover breathtaking views from Colle Gendarme. Visit the museum to learn about the reserve's unique flora and fauna, or explore the wildlife area, which provides refuge for rescued animals. The Colle San Biagio path ensures accessibility for visitors with disabilities.
