Pietrabbondante War Memorial

Located in the heart of Pietrabbondante, the War Memorial serves as a powerful reminder of the past and a symbol of the town's enduring spirit. The monument features a bronze statue of a Samnite warrior, a tribute to the ancient inhabitants of the area and a representation of the sacrifices made by the town's citizens during World War I. The monument was commissioned by a committee of Pietrabbondante immigrants in America, who raised 30,000 lire to honor their compatriots who died serving their country. The committee contacted sculptor Giuseppe Guastalla, a teacher at the “Regio Istituto Superiore di Belle Arti” in Rome, who created the sculpture of the Samnite warrior. The statue is approximately 3 meters tall and stands atop a 4-meter base, with the names of the fallen inscribed in bronze letters on the sides. The choice of a Samnite warrior is significant, as Pietrabbondante has ancient origins, with the Samnites inhabiting the area as early as the 6th century BC. The Samnites were a formidable Italic people who clashed with the Romans for centuries, and the statue serves as a reminder of their courage and resilience. The War Memorial is located in Via Roma, a central location in Pietrabbondante, making it easily accessible to visitors. The surrounding area offers stunning views of the Molise countryside, with its mountains, valleys, and forests. The memorial is a focal point for remembrance and reflection.
