Discover more about Saepinum Archaeological Area

Saepinum, located in the Molise region of Italy, offers a captivating journey back to Roman times. Originally founded by the Samnites, the town was captured by the Romans in 293 BC and transformed into a significant Roman center. Strategically positioned along the Via Latina, it thrived as a market town, experiencing substantial growth during the Imperial Roman period. Today, visitors can explore the extensive archaeological site and wander through the remains of this once-bustling town. The town's layout follows a classic Roman grid plan, with streets intersecting at right angles. Highlights include the well-preserved city walls, three original gates, the forum, basilica, and theater. The theater also houses the Museo della Città e del Territorio, displaying artifacts unearthed from the site. Unlike the grand ports of Pompeii and Ostia Antica, Saepinum was a provincial town, providing an intimate look into everyday Roman life. The site also contains remnants of peasant settlements built amongst the ruins, showcasing the area's continued habitation through the centuries. Saepinum became an Archaeological Park in 2021, marking an important step for the protection of this historical heritage.
