Discover more about Villa De Capoa

Villa De Capoa, also known as Villa Comunale De Capoa, is a cherished green space in the heart of Campobasso, Italy. This urban oasis has a rich history, beginning in the 18th century as a medicinal herb garden for the Franciscan convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie. Later, it was purchased by private owners and redesigned as a neoclassical park. In 1875, Countess Marianna de Capoa donated the villa to the city, establishing it as a central gathering place for citizens. The park spans approximately 16,000 square meters and features an Italian-style garden with tree-lined avenues, meticulously trimmed hedges, and winding paths. Throughout the grounds, visitors encounter statues, fountains, and stone arches, all contributing to the tranquil atmosphere. Noteworthy features include a tufa cave, a water basin, and two 15th-century tombs; one is the resting place of a dog named Alcon, and the other holds the remains of soldier Ricciardi Rota, who died in 1492. The main entrance on Piazza Falcone e Borsellino (formerly Piazza Savoia) welcomes visitors through a wrought iron gate and past floral-style lampposts crafted by Giuseppe Tucci. The park's diverse collection of trees, including sequoias, cedars of Lebanon, cypresses, Norway spruces, and lindens, adds to its allure and historical significance. Villa De Capoa provides a refreshing escape from the urban environment and a glimpse into Campobasso's cultural heritage.
