Rising from the highest hill in Orsara Bormida, the Castello d'Orsara Bormida is a striking example of a fortified historical residence with an attached agricultural estate. Originally built as a basic watchtower around the year 1000, it was expanded and converted into a castle in the 14th century, marked by the addition of an octagonal tower. The castle is mentioned in a document from 1196. Dante Alighieri, in his “Purgatorio,” thanked the Malaspina family, the ancient feudatories, for their hospitality during a visit. The castle features three prominent towers: the oldest square tower, the octagonal tower, and a smaller cylindrical tower that once served as a watchtower. Enclosed within the castle walls is a sprawling two-tiered garden. Inside, the rooms are adorned with period furnishings dating back to the 16th and 17th centuries, including majolica flooring, antique furniture, and paintings. Frescoes display the lineage of the noble families who resided here. The cellars, once used as prisons, now house an agricultural business that produces quality DOC wines like Barbera del Monferrato and Dolcetto d'Acqui. In the vicinity of the Castello is the Oratory of the Santissima Annunziata, showcasing Lombard Romanesque style with 17th-century frescoes. The Remondini family of Genoa, the current owners since the early 20th century, have meticulously renovated the interiors, preserving the architectural integrity while creating a welcoming space. The castle's history is also reflected in its name; the original name of Orsara was “URSARIA” because the territory was once infested with many bears.
